Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about 1099 Pro, IRIS filing, and choosing a replacement.
Is 1099 Pro being discontinued?
Not officially announced, but it's effectively being discontinued. 1099 Pro relies on the FIRE e-filing system, which the IRS is retiring on December 31, 2026. After that date, 1099 Pro cannot file 1099s. Sovos has not announced IRIS support for 1099 Pro, and given that the deadline is 9 months away, it's safe to assume they're not adding it. You need to switch platforms or face not being able to file at all.
What's the difference between FIRE and IRIS?
FIRE (Filing Information Returns Electronically) has been the IRS e-filing system since 1996. IRIS (Information Returns Intake System) is the replacement the IRS is launching. IRIS is newer, has different requirements, and is incompatible with FIRE. 1099 Pro works with FIRE but not IRIS. Most modern 1099 software already supports IRIS or has announced support. The cutover happens December 31, 2026.
Can I file to IRIS with 1099 Pro?
No. 1099 Pro is not IRIS-compatible and Sovos has not announced plans to make it compatible. After December 31, 2026, you cannot use 1099 Pro to file 1099s to the IRS.
Do I have time to migrate before the deadline?
You have 9 months (from March 2026). That's enough time if you start now. You need to: evaluate alternatives, test with your data, migrate your vendor master, train your team, and run a full pilot. If you wait until September, you'll be switching platforms during peak tax season. Start now.
What's the cheapest 1099 Pro alternative?
The IRS IRIS Taxpayer Portal is free. You log in, upload your 1099 file, and the IRS validates and files it. The catch: you're limited to 250 returns per upload, and you have to do your own data prep. For anything larger than that, Morado's flat-fee model is often cheapest at scale (5,000+ forms). For smaller volumes (100-500 forms), Tax1099 or Avalara are reasonable per-form pricing.
Can I export my data from 1099 Pro?
Yes. Log in to 1099 Pro and export your vendor master list, prior-year forms, and any custom fields. Do this soon. Most replacement platforms have data specialists who can help you map and import your data. The process usually takes 1-2 weeks.
Will my 1099 Pro data transfer to the new software?
Yes, but not automatically. You export from 1099 Pro as CSV or another format, then import into your new platform. Most vendors have data migration specialists who handle the mapping. It's a one-time process, usually taking 1-2 weeks if your data is clean, longer if there are duplicates or data quality issues.
What's the best 1099 software for small business?
For simplicity and support quality: BoomTax. For modern features and integrations: Tax1099. For free (if you have fewer than 250 forms): IRS IRIS Portal. For data cleanup: Morado. It depends on your priorities. Check the full comparison for details.
Do I need IRIS-compatible software by 2026?
Yes, by December 31, 2026, you do. If you're filing 1099s after that date, you need software that supports IRIS. This applies to all filers, not just 1099 Pro users. The IRS is shutting down FIRE, which means any software relying on FIRE (including 1099 Pro) will stop working.
What's the difference between per-form and flat-fee pricing?
Per-form pricing charges you for each 1099 form you file (e.g., $0.68 per form). At 100 forms, that's $68. At 5,000 forms, that's $3,400. Flat-fee pricing (like Morado) charges a single fee per season regardless of volume. At 100 or 5,000 forms, you pay the same fee. Flat fees are cheaper at high volume, per-form pricing is cheaper at low volume.
Can I use the IRS IRIS portal instead of buying software?
Yes, if you're filing fewer than 250 forms. The portal is free and legitimate. You log in, upload a CSV with your 1099 data, and the IRS files it. The catch: the 250 return limit per upload, which means if you're filing 5,000 forms, you're uploading 20 times. Plus, you have to do all your own data prep. It works for tiny filers but gets cumbersome fast.
How long does it take to migrate from 1099 Pro?
Full migration typically takes 2-4 weeks: 1-2 weeks for data import and setup, 1-2 weeks for testing and pilot. You can start earlier if you want to run in parallel (both systems at once). Most vendors have data specialists who speed this up. If you start now (March 2026), you have plenty of time before peak season.
What if my data is messy (duplicates, bad TINs, etc.)?
That's exactly what Morado is built for. It uses AI to parse messy data, identifies duplicates, validates TINs, and flags data quality issues before you file. Other platforms validate clean data but don't fix it. If cleanup is your problem, start with Morado.
Do I need vendor support in my 1099 software?
Not necessarily. Vendor support means contractors can fill out W-9s online instead of emailing you PDFs. It's convenient but not essential. If you need it, Avalara and Tax1099 have it. If you don't, BoomTax and Morado work fine without it.
Can I use my accounting software to file 1099s?
Some accounting software (QuickBooks Online, Xero) have built-in 1099 features, but they're usually limited. For serious 1099 filing (especially at scale), you need dedicated 1099 software. Tax1099 integrates with QuickBooks to pull data, which is a hybrid approach.
What if I'm filing W-2s too, not just 1099s?
Most 1099-focused tools don't handle W-2s. If you need both, Yearli is one option (all-in-one W-2, 1099, 1095). Otherwise, you might use separate tools or check if your accounting software handles W-2s.
How do I validate TINs in the new software?
All modern 1099 platforms include TIN validation. Most validate SSNs and EINs against IRS records. Morado specifically highlights TIN validation as a core feature and flags suspicious TINs for review. You can usually request bulk TIN matching before filing.
Can I file 1099-NEC, 1099-MISC, 1099-K, etc. with the same tool?
Yes, all the major platforms support multiple 1099 form types. Tax1099, Avalara, BoomTax, etc. all handle the standard 1099 forms. Make sure to check if your chosen platform supports the specific forms you need.
What about international vendors (W-8, 1042-S)?
Not all 1099 tools handle international forms. Tax1099 supports them. Avalara is the expert here—it's designed for international vendor management. If you have contractors outside the US, Avalara is your best bet.
Do I need to sign a contract with the new software?
Not necessarily. BoomTax has no contracts—you pay per-form on demand. Morado offers seasonal contracts. Tax1099 and Avalara typically have annual agreements. Check the terms before committing. Most offer month-to-month or seasonal flexibility.
